Ghatkopar or ‘Ghat-ke-upar’ (above the hill), as it was popularly known, derived its name from the many Ghats near Eastern Express highway where there were many saltpans. Indira Hegde, a resident of Ghatkopar for the last 40 years, says, "Ghatkopar was a marshy area when we first came here. I remember there was a backwater where the Kukreja Complex now stands."

Mrs Hegde, a yoga therapist who writes regularly for a Kannada newspaper, adds: "We spent the early part of our life in Chembur. The house being small, we decided to opt for a bigger one. We spent six months in Dombivili but the place was too far and commuting was a big problem, hence we went for a bigger house within the city limits. Luckily we came across this 560 sq ft flat in Ghatkopar and have since then made this suburb our home. We purchased a house in Ghatkopar since we liked the locality, the atmosphere and the residents. This place was well connected to every part of the city. It proved to be a wise decision financially too. "We purchased the house for Rs.60,000 and today the rates have shot up to Rs. 3,000-3,500 per sq. ft. The number of high-rises that have come up here have virtually made this place unrecognisable." They have maintained their decision to stay on because of the love and affection they have received living here. She adds, " It is a locality predominantly dominated by Jains and Gujaratis.

Mrs Hegde points out, however, that while the suburb has seen vast changes, it still retains its beauty. There is one thing about Ghatkopar that annoys Mr. Hegde - the skyrocketing prices of essentials like vegetables and fruits as compared to neighbouring areas like Chembur. He maintains that the reason for this is the locality being dominated by the higher middle class business community, mainly the Gujaratis.

He however appreciates the facilities available here, including schools, colleges and hospitals all just a stone's throw away. Mr. Hegde concludes, "The kind of development that has taken place in Ghatkopar is simply astonishing. If there is one way to describe this place, it would be that 'Ghatkopar has blossomed into a full-grown flower'.
